HaBO: Childhood Sweethearts Driven Apart by Family Death

Help A Bitch Out

This HaBO comes from April, who wants to find this romance. Content warning for the description below:

I read this book probably sometime between 2020 and 2022. I can’t remember the name. I want to say it’s like “second chance with my best friend’s brother”. But could not find anything that resembles the synopsis I remember.

From what I can remember, three friends (m, f, f) live next door or in same neighborhood. Two are siblings (twin boy and girl). They are either junior or seniors in high school and friends for a long time.

In the opening chapter, the two girls are getting ready for a school dance or something. The friend and brother have not told the sister they’re dating. Something happened and the girl (boy’s sister) dies. I can’t remember if it was a car accident or suicide.

The boy’s family is grief stricken (understandably) and either both or one of the families move away.

Several years later (maybe five), the girl has moved on and is helping her new boyfriend move in to an appointment he is sharing with roommates. One of the roommates is her first love. One time she stays the night and her boyfriend leaves for class. She hears her first love playing an old song with his guitar.

She starts staying at her house/apartment and he moves next door or across the street to try and win her back.

I want to say this takes place in the north, maybe Boston area, because in one scene he is taking her out for clam chowder and the restaurant has a fireplaces to keep warm.

Also I think in the synopsis it ends with something like “can they ever move past his his sister’s death.” Or something like that.

Does this ring any bells?
