I’m a veteran farmer from the lovely but much-ignored state of Nebraska, and it was through my many diverse experiences that I was able to write a book that transcends space, time, and even living things. The book was particularly inspired by my farm and dog, Ace, who still lives on the farm with his sidekick, “Beans”.
So what’s it about?
Why did they name me Ace?
I always thought it was because of my superior dog abilities. Though if I tip my head clear forward I can just see the upside down “Ace of cards” but in white there.
Well, maybe that’s just conformation of my great abilities. Yet, knowing the history of the farm going clear back to World War Two, and hearing about the Flying Aces practicing their acrobatic skills over our farm fields, maybe that had something to do with it.
My acrobatic skills are pretty darn good too, and certainly needed when I take on all sorts of varmints on the farmstead. It would be overrun without me, and my dog sidekick named Beans, no doubt! Yet then later in life I began noticing the spot on my chest, pretty well looks like a heart if you lick the hair over right.
The more I think about the story of this old farm, the kids who grew up here, the worries and struggles of its owners, and my masters; well it’s taken a whole lot of heart to keep it going. Maybe I’m just a living breathing symbol of that. Read on, and I’ll tell you the whole story. Don’t laugh too hard when I tell you about my own trials ! Maybe this is why the book is titled what it is, “The Greatest Ace”!
Some fun facts:
- The farm was “granted” to a family by an act of Congress called the Homestead Act, around 1900.
- With in the span of a hundred years the farm has progressed from horse drawn equipment, to dazzling green and yellow high tech machines to grow crops.
- Plenty of the food in grocery stores is partially made from two of the basic crops grown here; corn and soybeans.
- Over this period the farm has always had dogs, and cattle. Sometimes pigs and chickens. It still has horses.
- The big old farmhouse had five bedrooms. At one point a family with eight children living there.
- The farm is still operating!
Dogs sense of smell is so powerful, they can actually “age” what they smell. So, when my dog tracks me to find out where I am, it knows which direction my footsteps go!
What else are they capable of, that we don’t even yet know? Maybe Ace did find the history of the farm coming back to him at night under the stars. Or his great senses just knew the story because it all had happened at some point right where he lives.
Ace, though now growing old, still lives. He seems happy, and does a sort of prance after I lean over to give him a pet.
Dogs seem to have the ability to enhance people’s lives and help the to live longer. The next step would be to help bring them back, when something bad happens to their master. There is situations where science has found that people have returned to life even after their systems stopped.
All this offers hope. Ace always has had that in his eyes, even if it was simply for something in the table scrap dish !
